Biography
Born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1979, Alwan completed a BA in Computer information systems in Saudi Arabia, before obtaining a MA in Business administration in Portland, Oregon. At age 14 he began writing poetry; he later worked as a columnist for the Saudi Arabian newspapers “Al Sharq” and “Alwatan”.
His novel Beavers was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction 2013. Alwan is the 2017 recipient of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) for his novel A little Death, a fictionalized account of the real-life Sufi saint and traveler Ibn Arabi. In 2009 he was selected as one of the thirty-nine best Arab authors under the age of forty.
